Inaugurated on 14 October 1988, the imposing structure was originally unveiled as the museum dedicated to the autocratic ruler Enver Hoxha (1908–1985). The building works commenced in 1986 and concluded two years later, serving as a monument to Hoxha’s legacy until 1991. Conceived to resemble the wings of an eagle—a powerful emblem of Albanian identity—the structure’s unique design can only be fully appreciated from an aerial perspective. For those walking by, however, the monument presents itself as a pyramidal form. Its architectural conception was entrusted to a team led by Hoxha’s own daughter and son-in-law, blending familial influence with national symbolism. Known simply as ‘the Pyramid’ in everyday conversation, the building claimed a central spot on the Martyrs of the Nations Boulevard, at one of the city’s most bustling intersections. Its striking silhouette and storied origins have ensured its place as both a landmark and a conversation piece in the heart of Tirana. Since 2023, thanks to a re-concepted vision from MRVDV it has been transformed into the largest youth center, primarily focused on digital education, information technology culture, and serving as a hub for art, culture, professional courses, and other youth spaces.
